Quentin Meillassoux is a French philosopher. He teaches at the Université Paris 1 Badiou, who wrote the foreword for Meillassoux’s first book After Finitude. It is no exaggeration to say that Quentin Meillassoux has opened up a new path in the history of philosophy, understood here as the history of what it is to know. In his extraordinary text After Finitude, Meillassoux makes the strong claim that all post-Kantian philosophy has been dominated by what he calls “correlationism.

The argument depended on the denial of any necessary beings or connections in the universe; so we need an explanation of how science could be possible in such a realm. An Essay on the Necessity of Contingency, Trans.

After Finitude: An Essay on the Necessity of Contingency by Quentin Meillassoux

Only on the assumption that some form of logical positivism still reigns would that be the case. I’m sure others much more astute than I have given comprehensive reviews. Sign in Create an account. This is the goal of chapter 3, “The Principle of Factiality. He’s praised much for consistency, but he’s merely consistently unfair to every philosopher he refers to. I have rather mixed feelings about this book. This difference which characterizes the fundamental novelty of the threat to correlationism by the ancestral fossil however is arguably based in a mischaracterization of correlationism.

It will not only be an unavoidable point of reference for those working on the question of finitude, but also for those whose work deals with political theology, and the status of the religious turn of philosophy.

Certainly not the form of science! The problem for me is that at several points along the way of this chain of reasoning Meillasoux engages in some conceptual conflations which are difficult to accept. Meillassoux’s style of argumentation is unique and refreshing: The omnipotent idiot Sultan, gyres and gnaws at the heart of reality!

In short, it seemed like philosophy was stuck in two paths and at the time, the analytic-continental split was probably seen as more or less unbridgeable.

You could however make a funny story about how he wants to make something really big out of Hume’s idea of a ‘deus ex machina’-like intellectual principle see Hume section VII on necessary connections, the sentence with note 4 in contradistinction to any Divine Principle – I re Severe case of ‘should’ve gone with my intuitions’: To argue otherwise would be precisely not what correlationism should be, that is that it is predicated on a relation inherently finite in nature.

It allows the destiny of thought to be the absolute once more. It is in the Galilean-Copernican revolution that Meillassoux locates the moment when diachronic statements reveal thought’s contingency. Meillassoux performs the seemingly impossible task of resurrecting the stance of science and the absolute in philosophy while inaugurating a new brand of “unreason. For this reason, Meillassoux continues the war against Kant waged by Alain Badiou Meillassoux’s mentor that began in Being and Event with the mathematization of ontology and the re-ontologization of the consequences of Cantor’s legacy, thus giving way to a speculative materialist philosophical discourse.

The absolutization of facticity — the idea according to which Meillassoux posits the absolute impossibility of a necessary being — entails a shifting away from the principle of sufficient reason into an anhypothetical and absolute principle of unreason. The final chapter is reminiscent of the classical Whether you agree with the younger Meillassoux’s philosophy or not, you must agree that he is an excellent writer.

How then can one conceive the absolute today without falling back into a dogmatic, metaphysical position, or ending up in a skeptical one? I think Meillasoux and the rest of the “speculative realists” could gain a lot from engaging with Theodore Sider and at least a dozen other writers writing about metaphyics and epistemology in English; I’m not sure they have anything startlingly different to offer in exchange.

It’s yet another Post-Enlightenment Festivus miracle! Meillassoux performs the seemingly impossible task of resurrecting the stance of science and the absolute in ph The best review I can give a philosophy book is that it ripped a few of my assumptions about the universe to shreds – and I enjoyed every second of it.

After Finitude

Books by Quentin Meillassoux. Several of Meillassoux’s articles have appeared in English via the British philosophical journal Collapsehelping to spark interest in his work in the Anglophone world.

May 05, Eric Phetteplace rated it really liked it Shelves: It says a lot that the part of the book I followed most easily was the explanation of Cantor’s Set theory. Chapter 2, “Fideism, Metaphysics, Speculation,” not only maps the different positions that have determined finituds still determine different conceptions of the absolute, but also exposes the necessary conditions to de-absolutize correlationism and thus clear the way toward a truly speculative materialist form of the absolute.

This is the realm into which Meillassoux attempts to bring philosophy, through his conception of Ancestralityroughly the first 4. His preferred way of going about any topic is to meiplassoux at length what his opponent thinks and then refute it.

He terms this pre-human reality the “ancestral” realm. Published June 7th by Bloomsbury Academic first published Quotes from After Finitude: This is because this absolute appears as an extreme form of chaos “hyper-chaos”as a time that is “the eternal and lawless possible becoming of every law.

I’d also like to note that since the ebook version of this book I was reading didn’t have page numbers, it brought a slightly different perspective on the questions of finitude and infinitude that book raises.

With regard to ginitude, the first thing to note is that it is simply not true that modern Anglophone philosophy is in any way committed to it, in fact plenty of its practitioners would find nothing problematic about queentin.

Therefore, light waves could be taken as the reason behind the appearance of red, and red appears precisely to the extent that perception is insensible to the reason for its appearance. What is at issue throughout the book is to separate the absoluteness of meillasosux discourse from the broadly accepted claim that any conception of the absolute must necessarily be metaphysical.

The rehabilitation of the mathematical absolute contests three prevalent positions for which the de-absolutization of thought also implies its de-universalization: I suppose YECism is a genuine case of correlationism God, being eternal, always observes all that existsbut merely agreeing about that detail doesn’t make one a reactionary.

It is a question of thinking an absolute without thought, an absolute both independent from thought, and able to be conceived by thought in the eventuality of thought’s own absence or disappearance. Philosophy in the Making. Dec 04, Clare rated it it was ok Atter There is nothing like it.

Probably because Lyotard framed his ideas in the context of occasional essays which do not seem to have the same quentkn of argumentational development they were not received or have not meillassooux the same impact as a book like After Finitude, even if their conceptual implications are equally as far reaching. That’s maybe another badly worked out historical note in Meillassoux, but it’s the most promising which doesn’t necessarily make it promising – I guess most of the discussion on Meillassoux is about any possible future for its project.

An example of those details is that the female characters of the play wear colorful dresses, while the male characters wear black or grey suits; that is because the play tries to represent its reality from the point of view of the intellectual men of that period.

I wonder how believable this is: Again this is heady, but if you are interested in any of the above. It would have been dismissed for its amateurishness, and the author would have been taught the basics of “show, don’t tell.

Estou a pensar seriamente em enviar o livro para a editora e pedir o meu dinheiro de volta Actually, I had to put this very 19th Century novel down. The book takes place mostly in ViennaAustriain the yearand relates a fictional meeting between the doctor Josef Breuer and the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It requires vivid imagination on the part of the writer, something Yalom clearly lacks. Furthermore, in exploring each character, Yalom regurgitates their respective theories, while failing to move into the realm of new intellectual challenge either one of them might have presented to the other.

This book and this author have no idea why and clearly they only understand Nietzsche as if he were a comic book character. I’m not condemning the style by any means – the book is lucid as hell, and would serve as a lu key to any particularly grim high school senior en route to Freud, Nietzsche, and of course, Breuer.

They really aren’t that difficult to follow and a book like this one has too many errors of thought and is best left unread.

I waited to the almost half of the audio book, but no, I couldnt continue. So the author apparently invented something called a teaching novel.

On rare occasions the novel brings some forgotten, interesting statement–mostly from Nietzsche–but not enough to spend time with pages of talking heads.
